Description Esperanza is an innovative juvenile justice program that seeks to reduce the number of youth who are placed in juvenile facilities. We are working with the probation department and other city and state agencies to engineer structural changes that encourage the use of sanctions less restrictive than confinement. We also deliver a home-based, community-focused program that is used as a sentencing option for youth who would otherwise be incarcerated. Esperanza works with youth and their families in their own homes and communities, providing direct counseling services, helping to set short- and long-term goals, and facilitating connections to schools and community-based organizations to assist youth and caregivers in establishing longer-term supportive networks. Responsibilities Esperanza is seeking part-time tutors to provide educational support services to court-involved youth. Tutors will be responsible for assessing academic needs of youth and providing individualized instruction after-school and/or on weekends. Services will be provided in the office and in the field depending on current needs. Qualifications
- Experience teaching or tutoring adolescents with and without special education needs
- Experience with court-involved youth and/or in community-based organizations desirable
- Training or experience in utilizing strengths based approaches to working with youth
- Ability to work with a culturally diverse population
- Eagerness to travel to a variety of New York City neighborhoods
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Strong preference for individuals with more than 1 year of experience tutoring at-risk adolescents OR individuals who have completed or are currently pursuing an education-related degree
- Bilingual in Spanish a plus
Salary Hourly, dependent on education and experience
